Phil Voon and Give us a Goo Photography
I picked up a camera about 15 years ago and never really put it down since then...
So I did a 4 year B.A. degree in Photography at DIT...
During that time I worked as an assistant for press photographers and wedding photographers.
I also worked in Boot's photo lab in Jervis Centre on Sundays & holidays...tourist submitted photos of Ireland all had one thing in common - the Molly Malone statue was there to be abused..
I then GRADUATED IN PHOTOGRAPHY IN 2001 with an Honours Degree
After College, whilst freelancing, I was the Black & White Printer at Photolabs on Lennox St. and spent 8 hours a day in a darkroom that smelled like vinegar...I loved it! I got to print pro photographers work and learned a lot from their workflow. Invaluable...the strangest thing that ever happened was printing a photo of the twin towers when the radio announced the unfortunate plane crash...
I did a lot more freelancing, more assisting and anything really that was part of the Photo Industry.
I then did what a lot of twenty-somthings did - I travelled the world with my camera,sold stock photography, did some volunteering, had an exhibition, got stuck in India, taught English in Japan and returned home rejuvenated and married...
Back in Ireland, I had the opportunity to showcase my travel photography in a joint exhibition which is still showcased today as part of the promotions for the Japan Exchange Teaching Programme. The exhibition spurred myself and Patricia to start photographing as a full time business and we've never looked back.
We set-up Give us a goo photography in 2007 and things really took off (was voted as one of the best wedding photographers in Ireland by weddingsonline.ie and won a Kodak award for wedding photography UK & Ireland) - the word of mouth was priceless. Since then our wedding photos have been featured in weddings online, mrs2be, VIP and countless other magazines
I'm now 33 years old and we just had our first baby (September 23rd 2011).
:::: As a Wedding Photographer ::::
I reckon I've photographed roughly:
150 brides, 152 grooms, 1500 people crying, 15,000 people laughing, 5000 kisses, 450 bridesmaids, 300 Grooms, 120 cake cutting moments (including staged cuttings), 75 first dances, 70 best man speeches, countless flower arrangements, umpteen happy pageboys and flower girls, gazillion crying babies, too many drunk uncles, plentiful tired grandmothers and most of all a bejillion precious moments that makes us go "ahhhhhhhhhhh"
:::: As a Portrait Photographer ::::
They say never work with children or pets, I do, usually with their parents too, oh, and the occasional grandparent, not forgetting the uncles and aunts, usually all squeezed into a semi- d living room with me at the other end, back pressed up against a cabinet of Waterford crystal using whatever tricks to get them to smile. I love meeting people in their homes, it's so much more relaxed than a studio with bright lights.
:::: As a Commercial Photographer ::::
I also commercially produce images for companies and organisations such as Temple Street Childrens Hospital, Marie Keating Foundation, Fuel TV, Ernst & Young, BDO Simpson Xavier, Cornmarket Financial Group, Environmental Protection Agency, RSA Ireland, Aviva Stadium, Business and Leadership Magazine and Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as many more smaller businesses such as restaurants and bridal shops. I'm still working with some of the same companies on a number of projects and have developed a photographic style that suits and adapts to each company's new requirements year on year.
:::: What makes me your Photographer? ::::
Hopefully my galleries suit your tastes, but I like to think that my style is adaptable, what I find the most important in photography is building a rapport with any clients, making the most nervous person feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera. Being able to capture them in any environment without them feeling self conscious and delivering them with an image that surpasses their expectations.
So, go on then...Give us a goo
